Wildland Fire Monitoring

Land cover map of Africa for the year 2000 derived from SPOT-4 VEGETATION data (Source: Joint Research Centre, European Commission). Together with satellite-derived fire locations this map allows a quick interpretation of the vegetation type affected by fire. This particular scene, acquired by the MODIS sensor aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite, shows the northwestern region of Africa. The resulting haze and smoke can be seen blowing westward toward the Atlantic.  24 December 2002
