Following the Third International Symposium on Sustainable Management of Forest Resources, held in April 2004, the Forest Study Center at the University of Pinar del Río, Cuba hosted the Fourth International Symposium on Sustainable Management of Forest Resources (SIMFOR 2006), as well as the First International Workshop on Fire Management.

Sponsorship was provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO), the International Center of Forest Research (CIFOR), the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC) and the Forest Guard (CGB).

Both activities were held in Pinar del Río, Cuba from 19 - 22 April 2006.
