EuroFire Materials in Persian Language

Context of the Persian Version of the EuroFire Materials

Most of the destructive fires that affect fire-sensitive forest ecosystems and protected areas in the Middle East and adjoining countries of the Near East, the South Caucasus, the Balkans and Central Asia originate in agricultural lands. They are often consequence of the use of fire on arable lands after harvest, or use of fire to keep pastures free from brush and tree encroachment: Sometimes wildfires are caused by negligence of rural people or visitors (tourists) using campfires for cooking and warming. Such fires easily get out of control and cause very high ecological and environmental damages. The economic losses, including houses, villages, livestock and critical infrastructure, sometimes also the loss of lives or injuries of people, can be avoided if rural land management authorities, fire services and villagers are properly trained in the prevention, preparedness and control of wildfires.

Under the sponsorship of the EU Leonardo da Vinci programme the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC) has developed between 2006 and 2008 competency standards and basic training materials for professional and volunteer fire fighters – the EuroFire Competency Standards and Training Materials. Apart of national use the materials are increasingly used for cross-boundary cooperation in fire management within the Global Wildland Fire Network (GWFN) and the voluntary International Wildfire Preparedness Mechanism (IWPM). Through a better local understanding of corporate training materials of firefighters the interoperability, effectiveness and efficiency of countries cooperating in wildfire emergencies is increased – thanks to the meanwhile 14 language versions.

In early 2016 the EuroFire materials have been translated to Persian. They were first presented at the occasion of the First International Fire Management Week, Islamic Republic of Iran, which was held in Mazandaran, Kelarabad, 9-12 May 2016. During the week a National Round Table on Fire Management was held, regional information on cross-boundary cooperation in fire management discussed and the EuroFire materials introduced to the authorities. After the Fire Management Week the participants of the training course were encouraged to apply them for capacitating local administrations and rural communities in safe and efficient control of wildfires. At future regional trainings such as the last one held under the co-auspices of the UNISDR Regional SE Europe / Caucasus Wildland Fire Network in Turkey in 2014 the guidelines will be used for cross-boundary training.
