Towards Enhancing Cooperation in Fire Management within the UNECE Member States

Cooperation between the forest fire science and the forest fire management community of the Russian Federation with international partners has been initiated in 1991 and started systematically with the first East-West Fire Conference „Fire in Ecosystems of Boreal Eurasia“, associated with the Bor Forest Island Fire Experiment, held in Krasnoyarsk in 1993. This conference and international experiment laid the fundaments of cooperation of the forest fire science community in the East and in the West. Since 1993 numerous joint research activities, workshops and seminars have been conducted and resulted in progress of forest fire science globally. It was followed by the UNECE/FAO Seminar on Forest, Fire, and Global Change, held in Shushenskoe, Russia, in 1996, followed by the International Conference on Cross-Border Forest Fires and Cooperation in their Suppression, held in Irkutsk, Russia, in 2010, which addressed the need to enhance transboundary cooperation in fire management. These activities have been facilitated and supported by the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC). Since 2011 the GFMC is intensifying the cooperation with the Russian Federation in the frame of the bilateral Russia-German Cooperation in Sustainable Forest Management and its joint Fire Management Task Force. The translation and application of the EuroFire Competency Standards since then is a contribution of GFMC, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
