Fire assessment mission to Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on request by the UN and on behalf of UNDP, UNEP and the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit, in conjunction with the UNISDR Regional Southeast Europe / Caucasus Wildland Fire Network (J.G. Goldammer, N. Nikolov); Skopje, Macedonia.



Effects of a high-severity fire (24-26 July 2007) , which destroyed 500 ha of natural pine forest (Pinus nigra, P. sylvestris) near Berevo, Macedonia.


Macedonia suffered some damages by burned telephone and power lines, such as in Katlanova in July 2007.


A wildfire, which burned 2800 ha of forest (P. nigra) and other lands on 27-29 July 2007, also burned down several houses of an informal Roma settlement in the outskirts of Bitola, Macedonia. 178 persons were evacuated.



Unexploded ammunition (UXO) from WW I combat theatres at the Macedonian line of contact in 1917 is representing a severe threat to human safety. More than 70 explosions of artillery grenades occurred during the 2007 fires nearby Bitola, Macedonia; no casualties reported.
