USA — A brush fire that started Thursday in Big Cypress National Preserve has burned 300 acres and is expected to grow over the weekend.

The fire started 2 miles north of Interstate 75 and west of L-28 Canal Road in eastern Collier County, according to the National Park Service.

On Friday, aviation and ground units assessed trails for containment and worked to identify structures that could be at risk. The park service is referring to the blaze as the Cowbell Fire.

The fire is burning in pineland and cypress habitat, according to a news release. The source of the fire is not yet known, officials said.

“Interagency teams have directed fire resources to set up containment lines, protect private property and appropriately manage the fire,” said Big Cypress Superintendent Tamara Whittington in the release. “Our primary goal is to reduce the spread to critical resource areas and private structures in the area.”
