1 Aerial view of a typical everglades landscape. Small and medium-sized tree islands in this part of the Everglades are scattered in the wetlands (marshes). Recurring fires keep the marshes open and inhibit the spread of trees and bushes into the wetlands. 2 Fire burning in the sawgrass (Cladium jamaicensis) at the edge of a pine tree island. 3-5 Different views of typical Everglades fires, often creating thick black or white smoke plumes. 6 The effects of natural (lightning) or prescribed management fires produce large fire scars in the Everglades landscape. The fire scar signals are easily depicted by NOAA AVHRR.
